Who doesn’t enjoy the brightly-colored buoys crafted by fishermen to harvest their catch? These hand-made buoys are used to locate and identify each fisherman’s territory. In the Pamlico and Albemarle Sounds of North Carolina they identify crab pots (cages). Sadly, young Carolina Fishermen have taken to using empty white, plastic containers instead of wooden buoys. They are cheap and can be made quickly. In the New England area, the bright buoys are used to locate and identify lobster pots. Fishermen can readily identify each other’s “territory” and woe is the “poacher” who attempts to steal another’s catch.
